Strange Love: my review of Plastic

No this is not a review of plastic bags or other plastic products but of a comicbook titled "Plastic".I found out about this comic flipping through a copy of Preview magazine and after reading the description of this series i knew i had to pick it up.Written by Doug Wagner art by Daniel Hillyard and colors by Laura Martin published by Image comics.
After reading the 1st 5 issues i think of it as "Dexter" mash up with "John Wick".The comic starts out with Victor and his girlfriend Virginia who are on a road trip and seems like they have 2 loves sex and doughnuts. The couple stops at a small gas station for doughnuts and gas when Virginia is harassed by a group of men Victor flips out and attacks the men and leaves with his lady. One of the men he beat up turns out be the son of crime boss Thaddeus Belliveau who even though embarrassed by his son's actions decides to get back at Victor by kidnapping him and Virginia.Along with Thaddeus we learn about Victors pass and his set of skills and he gives Victor a chance to use those skills for him or Victor won't see Virginia again. This may sound like a familiar story there is a twist...spoilers alert.....Virginia is a plastic sex doll yes you read right. seriously go pick up this comic by the 5th issue your mind will be blown..no pun intended.
So don't judge Victor hey love is love...and the writing and art goes great together and i cant wait to see where this story goes.

A Celebration of the Force

Since the 1st one in Denver Colorado in 1999 every year there's been a convention for Star Wars fans called Star Wars Celebration and always in a different location, this year it'll be in Orlando Florida April 13-16.As the name implies it's a celebration of all things Star Wars from the live action movies, animated tv shows, merchandise to cosplay and a ton of panels on different subjects.People of different races, age and sex meet  together  to enjoy this  particular weekend.
This year's celebrations biggest thing will be the upcoming movie episode 8 "The Last Jedi" the director and some of the actors will be there and they will be showing a trailer on Friday of that weekend. Don't despair my friends if like me you can't make it to Orlando there's still a way to be part of it like you're right there. The Star Wars channel on YouTube will be streaming live through out the weekend so you'll see everything as it happens. There are also websites and podcast that will keep you up to date like the official Star Wars site,Blackgirlnerds,Brews and Blasters,WSTR podcast and TheForce.net to name a few. I'm sure there also be a ton of pictures and videos on Instagram just use the hash tags like #StarWarsCelebration #SWCO.So if you're stuck at work or a family event this weekend you can still be part of Star Wars Celebration and may the force be with you.
Until next time my friends stay geeky and hungry.

Mr."Not so Terrific"

When the TV series Arrow announced it was adding the character Mr Terrific i was giddy but also knew it wouldn't exactly be from the comics like they did with most of the characters giving them the "Christopher Nolan treatment" like Ra's al Ghul and Deathstroke who I liked.I figured it would be the same without Mr. Terrific.
In the comics Mr Terrific "Micheal Holt" is one of the smartest people in the DC universe. He has the ability to pick up and retain complex skills and abilities that would take other people their whole lives to master. He's a black belt in 6 different martial arts and a Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon and is invisible to electronic detection. I knew the show would "water him down" but damn.
The version we got was a nerdy assistant to Felicity who was crazy smart which I was cool with thinking ok he's gonna get smarter and smarter as the series goes on. They showed us his orbs like in the comics, the "T" on his face even the "Fair Play" on his jacket so it was looking good. They giveth and they take it away,Curtis Holt instead of Michael Holt was an Olympian but a bronze medalist instead of gold that might sound like a small thing to some but why  do that in the 1st place. On the show he's always getting his butt kicked, acting goofy and whining it breaks my heart to watch this. The latest episode Wild Dog,O Dog,Mad Dog 20 20 whatever his name is got into Mr Terrific's head c'mon son really? Wait he does have one impressive power dude can braid his hair in seconds in one second he's in full 'fro in the base before a mission the next he's on the mission with his hair braided he needs to quit the hero game and go be a hairdresser,he could make a ton of money.
Don't get me wrong I like Echo Kellum as an actor it's just what the writers are doing to the character, like some people have said they should've stayed with him as the goofy tech guy and not touched the whole Mr Terrific thing. So here's hoping they fix this but Arrow has been constantly disappointing it's viewers.
So until next time my friends stay geeky and hungry.

Looking Forward to my 2017 Geekdom

2016 was a rough year for alot of reasons and the same can be said for the geek world there were some mediocre to bad movies, comics, video games and the deaths of comicbook creators like one of my favorite artists Darwyn Cooke. There were some bright spots like Deadpool,Captain America Civil War,Rogue One and Netflix shows like Daredevil season 2,Luke Cage,Stranger Things and The Get Down.
2017 looks like it's going to be a good at the movies. Personally I'm looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2,Spider-Man Homecoming,Thor: Ragnarok,Wonder Women and of course Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Comicbooks I'm looking forward to are basically ones I started last year Powerman and Iron Fist,Black Panther,Doctor Strange,Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps and the book that surprised me in 2016 Superman.
As far as video games I can't wait to get my hands on God of War,Injustice 2,Ghost Recon: Wildlands,Marvel vs Capcom: Infinte,For Honor and Spider-Man.
I hope you guys are looking forward to alot of things this year and don't get disappointed once you get to watch, read or play them.
Until next time my friends stay geeky and hungry.

Get My Geek Back

You've probably heard phrases like "get your groove back, swagger even mojo back" well I have to get my "Geek back". You may or may have not noticed I haven't posted anything on this blog in a long time well between family visiting from different times,my work schedule, traveling during holidays my "geekdom" has fallen to the wayside. I fell behind on my comics,tv shows and haven't touched my PS4.I was able to see Rogue One a Star Wars story which is already in my top 3 of Star Wars movies and got to sneak away to watch the Doctor Who Christmas Special.
Now that the holidays are over and there won't be anymore visits from people or trips anywhere for awhile I can get back to it.I plan on catching up on my comics, give my PS4 the attention it deserves and posting more and redesigning this blog. There are some stuff that's in the planning stages that I can't talk about right now but hopefully will be coming soon and it should be fun.
As I get my "Geek back" until next time my friends stay geeky and hungry.

Labor day weekend for most people is a time to enjoy off from work and chill with family and friends,BBQing, watching baseball or the start of college football. My favorite thing to do on that weekend is to attend Dragoncon in Atlanta, unlike other scifi/comicbook conventions Dragoncon's main thing is cosplay which is fans dress as their favorite character from comics, animation, video games etc.
I saw alot of cool cosplay  of course there were a ton of Harley Quinns, Deadpools and Star Wars but there were also some unique characters so I'm sharing a list of my top 10 cosplayers from the weekend and in no particular order.
10 John Snow from Game of Thrones 9.Riddler and Scarecrow 8. Assassin's Creed 7. Stormtrooper with cookies 6. 11 from Stranger Things 5. Sinestro Corps 4.Luke Cage and Storm 3. Michael Phelps 2.One One from Game of Thrones 1. Granny as Harley Quinn

Here are Whovian there a Whovian everywhere a....

For those of you who don't know a Whovian is a person that's a Doctor Who fan either old school or new fan,I'll give a brief description. The series started on the British tv station the BBC on November 23rd in 1963 played by actor William Hartnell and basically it's about an alien only known as the doctor travels through time and space on adventures with one or two companions " sidekicks" and his body  and regenerate with a different face, body and personality but still maintains the memories of his past selves.Over the years there have been 12 Doctors technically 13 but I won't get into all that right now.
Over the years the popularity of the series has grown immensely. I've ran into Whovians in many different places not just at comicbook/ scifi conventions and different sex, race and ages especially when I'm wearing one of my Doctor Who t-shirts.A gas station attendant in Kentucky, a cashier at a foodstore, teenager at the cornbread festival, a group of 20 something girls at a farmer's market and while walking into a restaurant a young man ask to shake my hand after seeing my t-shirt.Once in Detroit I noticed a lady across the bar that kept looking over at me and my ego thought she was checking me out,she ran up to me as I was leaving to say she liked my shirt and how the 8th Doctor was her favorite lol.Thats another thing whenever Whovians meet the 1st question is who is your Doctor? and the answer is either the name of the actor or the number like mine is the 10th Doctor or David Tennant the actor who played him.
Recently my wife and I went on a cruise and while waiting in line a kid about 5-6 years old gave me a fist bump when he saw my t-shirt.During the cruise I met a gentleman from England who told me a cool story about going home and running into an army of cybermen walking down the street then he realized they were filming an episode of Doctor Who.Once in the locker room at work a coworker said "I need to go home and regenerate" we both laughed while people around us didn't know what was so funny.
So you never know a cashier,a teacher, policeman, your neighbor or even your personal doctor might actually be a Whovian.
Until next time my friends stay geeky and hungry.

"I Fart Mystical Powers"

Recently Marvel comics relaunched the series Power Man and Iron Fist by writer David Walker and artist Sanford Greene bringing together again Luke Cage and Danny Rand. For those of you who never read the original series and might only know of Luke Cage from his appearance on the Netflix series Jessie Jones I'll give a quick break down of their story.Luke Cage was wrongfully imprisoned and was experimented on the experiment ended up giving him super strength and his body virtually invulnerable.Luke used his powers to break out of prison and clear his name and went on to become the superhero know as Power Man. Danny Rand was a orphan who ended up in the far away mysterious city of K'un Lun where he learned their mystical martial arts and as his name implies he can channel his " Chi" to make his hands a powerful weapons. Years later he moved back to America and discovered his farther was owner of Rand Corporation that he took over but still rather spend his time being the hero Iron Fist. The two became partners known as Heroes for Hire until eventually going separate ways.
David Walker and Sanford Greene have reunited the duo in the new series  if you like movies like Lethal Weapon,48 hrs,etc you'll like this book .The dynamic between the two is fun,Danny is all too excited to team up with his old partner while Luke is very reluctant now that he's a husband and farther, spoilers for those of you who watch Jessica  Jones. Walker's writing style is funny and realistic and full of great lines like Iron Fist's "I fart mystical powers" or Power Man's "Fiddle Faddle". Green's art is unlike any I've seen and I've been reading comics since the 70's...yeah yeah you do the math. Unlike some artist he doesn't have a "cookie cutter" way of drawing body's each character has their own shape and face which is refreshing.I highly recommend this series which is only on issue 2 and from what I've heared from a interview Walker and Greene did on a podcast there's something big about to happen in the Marvel Universe  and it involves Power Man and Iron Fist so jump onboard now while it's still early.

I Like Sloppy Seconds

Ok first of all get your minds out of the gutter this blog post is about my love of used bookstores and especially used or "second hand" trade paperbacks or graphic novels.Paperbacks are collections of 3 or more issues of a comicbook series and Graphic novels are usefully a one shot story or mini series. Don't let the words "used books" scare you off I have yet to find a book that wasn't in almost perfect condition,no torn covers or missing pages.
Over the years I've found some great stuff if it was old stories I once read now collected in a trade, classic stories I never got around to reading or stories I've heard about from friends or someone talked about on a podcast. If you're a fan of the show The Walking Dead and want to check out the comicbook version it's alot less expensive and quicker to get the trades from a used bookstore instead of trying to pick up the individual issues. Luckily I've found some good ones like Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier, Frank Miller's Ronin and a few "outside the box" gems, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's Sex Criminals,Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba' James Jean's Umbrella Academy and the Luna brothers The Sword.
Now don't get me wrong I still buy individual issues of certain series but do yourself a favor and check out a used bookstore ,you might find someone's "sloppy seconds " that you like!
Until next time my friends stay geeky and hungry!

Raise Lord Vader

Recently Marvel comics got the rights back to publish Star Wars comics. They came out with comics that tell stories from after episode IV : A New Hope and comics focusing on characters from Princess Leia,Lando Calrissian to even a Chewbacca comic, yes there's a Chewbacca comic. The one I like best is Star Wars: Darth Vader written by Keiron Gillen and art by Salvador Larroca .This story picks up as Vader is on a mission to find the pilot who blew up the Death Star and his 1st stop is to Jabba the Hutt and the whole sequence is almost excatly like when Luke Skywalker met Jabba in Return of the Jedi.As the story goes along we get to see the complicated "relationship" between Vader and the Emperor and how Darth Vader is a more than a heavy breather boogie man in a black suit.
Gillen has written a  big movie style story more than just Vader trying to find Luke,we get a "Ocean's 11" type caper and one of my favorite scenes is when Vader figures out Luke is his son.The way Vaders dialogue is written you can't help but hear James Earl Jones voice in your head as you read along.
Larroca's art is so detailed his panels at the beginning of each book is like the start of a Star Wars movie.Even with the mask on you can kinda tell what Darth Vader is thinking by the way he draws him.We meet alot of new characters through out this story my favorites are Triple Zero and BeeTee 2 droids Vader makes, they're evil versions of C3P0 and R2D2.All Triple Zero is interested in is torturing and killing and his dialogue is humorous in a dark kinda way.
I highly recommend you check out this series it's alot more than you may think and you get to see some of what happened between the 1st movie "A New Hope" and "Empire Strikes Back".
Until next time my friends stay geeky and hungry.
